8 things to consider before you build a pond

8 things to consider before you build a pond

Ok so now you have the basics down as far as what you think you want to a pond.

Size, depth, location is just where you start. After you decide that then is the fun stuff.

Water fall

Not everyone includes a waterfall when they build a pond, and it can be added later. But Waterfalls provide valuable aeration to your water feature while creating the soothing sound of running water. Especially if you are going to include fish like Koi or goldfish you will really want to consider adding a waterfall.

Adjustable Flow Pump

Just about everyone knows you need a pump in your pond. Try an adjustable flow pump with a remote control. It lets you turn the volume of your waterfalls up or down from anywhere. Want a quiet dinner by the pond? Keep the volume low. Having a large party? Turn up the flow to create your “party waterfalls!”

Pond Lighting

Adding garden and pond lighting extends your viewing pleasure well into the evening hours. Lights placed behind waterfalls create drama during the nighttime hours. Underwater lights at the edges of the pond reflect off the fish as they swim by. Set your lights on a timer so you never have to worry about turning them off and on. Make your pond the nighttime focal point!

Pond Plants

Pond plants help your water garden in so many ways. So go ahead and splurge on a beautiful water lily. Not only will it add gorgeous color to your pond, but the lily pads help shade the pond and give your fish a place to hide from predators. Available in hardy and tropical varieties, you’ll find an endless assortment of water lilies. They do best in depths of 18”-30”. If you are thinking you may like a pondless or shallow pond there are many bog plants that will add life and beauty to your pond. Cattails, water iris, pennywort, papyrus and ribbon grass are just a few.

Pond Fish and Critters

Adding fish to your pond is a great way to enhance the water feature lifestyle. You’ll enjoy feeding them at the pond’s edge and will feel the stress melt away as you watch them swim about. Why do you think so many doctors’ offices have aquariums? To help you relax! You can find a huge selection of suitable fish for your pond. Koi, goldfish, golden orphs, hi fin banded sharks, plecostomus, tadpoles, frogs and turtles to name just a few that we have and recommend.

Fountain

Have you thought about adding a fountain? Fountains not only add beauty to your pond, but they provide valuable aeration as well. If you think your existing waterfall isn’t adding quite enough oxygen to your pond, consider adding a fountain. You can place it in the center, or near the edge of a pond for drama. If a fountain is too big you may like the size and scale of a whimsical spitter.

Algae control device

Everyone wants an algae-free pond and the Aquascape IonGen® electronic algae controller effectively kills string algae without the use of traditional liquid chemicals. It is fully adjustable to add just the right amount of protection.

If it is green water that haunts you then consider installing an U.V. clarifier. It can be part of your filter system or installed inline. It will make green water a thing of the past.

Pond Filtration

In most cases a filter is a must. It can be installed as part of your waterfall or an external unit. You can also install a filter in the pond but it is not recommended. It is not very effective and difficult to clean properly.

Can I have a pond during a water shortage? California Drought

Can I have a pond during a water shortage?

If you have or ever thought of having a water garden or pond and worry that it is not a good time because of the water shortage – think again. Now more than ever a pond is a great idea, especially in drought ridden areas like Southern California. Most would be surprised to know that ponds use far less water than a lawn or garden. The same water is recirculating over and over again. Then when you do need to clean the filters or change some of the water out it can be used elsewhere in the yard. So you would be recycling as well. Then when you add new water it will only be to top it off from time to time.

Now that being said, it is a must to choose the best possible pond builder. But how is that possible? A referral is a good idea. Your neighborhood pond supply company? May be.

After finding a great pond builder that has many years of experience and professional training…
Ask a lot of questions!

Ask to see other ponds that they have built.

Make sure they ask and understand what you are expecting from their new yard centerpiece. Now more than ever you need water in your garden. Animals and birds who have been displaced for the lack of water will be appreciative of your water oasis.

Building a Stream Bed

Source: http://pacificponds.com

Building a stream bed

One of our customers had a narrow area in her front yard that she wanted to turn into a stream bed. No pond,  just a stream bed. She liked the idea of providing an area for all the woodland critters that wandered into her yard a place to enjoy a drink of water but still be safe for the neighborhood kids. After all it is in her front yard.

First, we planned together and marked out the area. This is the best way to see in real life the size and shape. Many times a customer has an idea and when they see it – well it may need to be bigger or smaller.

Secondly, we dug out it all out including a deep area for the water storage. Remember even if you are making a pondless waterfall or stream bed there is a pond that holds all the water and the pump. It is just covered safely with rocks. But it is still there.

Thirdly,  in goes the pond liner ( we like the firestone EPDM 45 mil pond liner) It is important to cover the entire pond and waterfall or stream area with one liner. This will minimize leakage. When you use a couple of smaller liners it is very easy to miss a fold or a rock can move and you will have a leak.

Then comes the fun – all the rocks are installed to make a gentle fall of water from top to bottom. At the end will be your pond area with your pump installed in the bottom.  We use egg crate or plastic boxes to hold the rock up off of the pump. Fill the pit with rocks and you have the base of your stream bed.

You can add pond plants like cattails or pickeral rush to name a few bog plants that will give your stream bed a more natural look.

This couple was very happy to see the deer and other friends coming on a regular basis to enjoy the cool water. They also enjoy the beautiful water feature and wonderful sound of water flowing in their front yard.

Pond netting keeps the predators away

Source: http://pacificponds.com

Pond netting keeps the predators away

Predators can take a beautiful pond and make a terrible mess. There are many ways to protect your pond fish and other critters like turtle and frogs. This is an example of one way you or your pond builder can add protection without destroying the look of your garden pond. Netting comes in many sizes and can be added just at the surface so it is not impeding on the look of the pond too much. In this photo of a beautiful natural water garden pond you can see even the aquatic plants are growing through the netting. The Koi and goldfish are happy and safe.

Making a nice backyard with a pond

Source: http://pacificponds.com

Making a nice backyard

Recently a client came to us from seeing a pond we had built for a Home and Garden Show. The couple said that they were looking to make a nice backyard. They wanted a pond with a stream bed and two waterfalls, large flagstone pavers and a fire pit.

Well my first thoughts were of a large yard with plenty of room for a stream and a good size pond. But when I visited their home, I was surprised by the size we had to work with. The dimension was no more than 28’ long and about 12’ wide.  So this is what we came up with

On one side we built about a 4’ waterfall into a pond about 10’ x10’. We made the pond roughly 3’ deep for the Koi. The other side has a small waterfall with a stream that empties into the pond and  is roughly 24-30” wide. One thing we did slightly different on this job, is that we put a separate motor to the stream in the pond, so that the stream could be turned off separately from the pond if they didn’t want to run it all the time.  The key to a well operating stream is to make certain that there is plenty of water flow to prevent algae growth.  This backyard pond really made a difference , but what really finished the job off was the installation of the flagstone pavers and the firepit we installed. When choosing a licensed contractor, it is nice to find one that can handle all the trades so that the job moves along at a nice steady pace.

Pondless fountain

Source: http://pacificponds.com

Pondless fountain

This fountain is a very classy contemporary water feature. We are showing this in a pondless application which gives it an element of safety. It is a good choice in public or commercial areas. It is made to not only be safe but verily maintenance free. The construction is different than that of a pond. The pond builder has made a large pit filled with rock supported with a grid to make sure there is a open areas of water at the bottom. Then the vase or urn for the fountain is supported on the rock. The pit must be large enough to hold at least two times the volume of the vase or urn.
